| Girl in Mayo |
|
| Many years ago in the County of Mayo, a young girl was promised in marriage to her childhood sweetheart. They were very much in love and were busily preparing their new home which he had built for her. Two days before they were due to wed, he disappeared without a trace. He left no note, no message and no clue to where he could have gone. The girl was devasted. As the years passed she waited in vain for him to return with no word of where he might be or what had happened to him, She never married or found another love but lived alone in their little house. One day, when men were digging turf on the bog, they found a body buried in the peat. It was her sweetheart. His body was perfectly preserved. Whilst she had grown old with the passage of time, he looked exactly the same as he did when they were young together. "...and I could have loved the sorrows of your changing face..." |
