Oisin and Niamh
The Warriors of the Fianna were hunting by the sea when they came acsoss a strange and beautiful young maiden. She was Niamh, the only daughter of the King of the Underwave. As soon as she saw Oisin, the son of Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool), she fell in love with him.She asked him to leave and go to live with her in Tir na n'Og -the Land of Youth -where he would be rich and live with her for ever. Oisin declared that he wanted no reward but her love -"You are my choice beyond all the women in the world and I will go with you"-. He took her up on his horse and galloped straight out to sea - into the west. After a short time he felt homesick and asked to return from the Kingdom under the Sea for a short visit to his homeland. Niamh agreed to this but warned him not to dismount from his horse and set foot upon the ground. On his return he found that three hundred years had passed and all the warriors of the Fianna were long dead. When he met men who were struggling to lift a huge stone, without thinking he leapt down to help them. In an instant he turned into an old, old man and was lost from Niamh and Tir na n'Og for ever.
