| Diarmuid and Grainne |
|
| Grainne, about to marry Fionn mac Cumhaill, fell in love with Diarmuid at the betrothal feast in Tara. She persuaded him to carry her away and they fled the court. Diarmuid stayed loyal to Fionn during a long pursuit but one day, as they crossed a stream, a spurt of water splashed her leg. She remarked that that the water was bolder than Diarmuid and it was then that they became lovers. Eventually Fionn forgave them but after Diarmuid was wounded in a boar hunt on Ben Bulben, Fionn refused him magical water and Diarmuid died. "....Ochone! you were my happiness and mournful and cold is my bed without you..." |
