O'Suilleabhain Bearra led a thousand of his followers on a long march from Glengarrif in West Cork to Leitrim in the winter of 1602-1603. Men women and children suffered great hardship and attacks by their enemies during their trek. By the time they reached Leitrim most had deserted and only thirteen were left in the group. When they crossed Mount Mary in East Galway, the heaviest snow in memory made this the worst night in the two week journey. "... I swear by the oath of my people that we will endure and succeed...."
